The basics

What exactly is a fractional executive?

A fractional executive is an experienced leader who joins your company in a real role, like CEO, President, COO, or CMO, but on a part-time or fixed-term basis. You get someone who has run companies before, working inside your business and accountable for results, without the cost and commitment of a full-time hire.

How is this different from hiring a consultant?

Consultants analyze your business and hand you a recommendation. What happens next is up to you. We join your team, help make the decisions, and stay to deliver the results. We sit in your board meetings, stand in front of your investors, and put our names on the outcome.

What roles do you take on?

Usually CEO, President, or COO, and sometimes CMO. In some engagements we don’t hold a title at all and instead work directly with the founder as a hands-on advisor. The role depends on what the business needs.

What kinds of companies do you work with?

Our deepest expertise is in consumer packaged goods: beverage, food, retail, and newly regulated categories. That said, the fundamentals we bring, like strategy, capital readiness, and operating discipline, apply to most industries, and we’ve worked well beyond CPG. Most of our clients are growing companies that need senior leadership but aren’t ready to hire it full-time.

Working together

How much time do you commit?

It varies by engagement. Some clients need two days a week on an ongoing basis. Others need a leader fully engaged through a specific event like a capital raise or a turnaround. We shape the commitment around the need and adjust as the business changes.

How long does an engagement last?

Some run a few months around a specific event. Others are multi-year embedded roles, and a few of our client relationships have been going for almost four years, since our founding. There’s no standard term. We agree on the scope up front and stay as long as we’re adding real value.

Do you take equity instead of fees?

Often, yes. We like having skin in the game, and many of our engagements include an equity or performance component. The exact structure depends on the business, the stage, and the scope of the work.

Where do you work?

We’re based in Canada and work with companies across North America. Most engagements mix on-site and remote time depending on what the work requires.

Capital & fit

Can you actually help us raise capital?

Yes, and it’s some of our most frequent work. We’ve closed five capital raises with LoomNX clients, the largest an $8 million Series B, and most of the investors were found through our leaders’ networks. Over their careers, our partners have raised more than $100 million for multiple ventures. We get the business ready, structure the financing, bring investors to the table, and coach the founder through every pitch until the round closes.

Do you take every engagement?

No. We join your team as a real part of it and we put our names on the work, so fit matters. Before we take anything on, we make sure the founder’s values and the goals of the business line up with ours. When they do, we’re all in.

How do we get started?

Reach out and tell us what’s going on in the business. If it looks like a fit, we’ll start with a two-week diagnostic and come back with the leader we’d put in, the plan, and the terms we’ll hold ourselves to.
